Written by H. E. Ambassador Stephen Kojo Sackey
I can state emphatically that, we can make a meaningful impact in our social settings, we cannot rule out the role of arts, culture and heritage in shaping where we live and make it a better place. He has called on all Traditional Authorities and other leaders in various Government to have a collaborative effort to create public spaces that people, home and abroad, will love and feel connected to thereby promoting our culture and values.
Undoubtedly, Ghana is an example of a placemaking project that has become a cultural landmark. Featuring iconic sculptures, gardens and performance spaces. These aesthetic sites have transformed the areas into a dynamic public space which attracts visitors across the globe. The local economy has been boosted because of the patronage that is why we have to cherish our placemaking in our societies. He added.
“Here are some of the placemaking areas which has raised the image of Ghana higher: Bunsu
Arboretum, Aburi Botanical Garden, Wli Waterfalls, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, Manhyia Palace, Okomfo Anokye Sword, Cape Coast Castle, Paga Zenga Crocodile Pond, Kintampo Waterfalls in the Bono East Region etc.”

The captivating environment has made a significant impact.
Ghana is one of the major destinations for tourists traveling to West Africa. As an English-speaking country, the majority of its visitors come from the United States, in 2023, nearly 134,000 people visited the country from the United States.
In that year, around 1.1 million overall tourist arrival were registered. This represented a sharp increase compared to the three preceding years which had showcased a gradually rising trend vis-à-vis the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Most of the visitors arrived for business, family, and holiday purposes. This has strengthened the ties between the two Countries, Ghana and United States of America.
Tourism forex earnings for Ghana is US$1.5 billion per annum. establishing Ghana as the "homeland" globally. The overall hotels and restaurants in Ghana contributed an estimated 3.9 billion Ghanaian cedis, some 257.3 million U.S. dollars, to Ghana's GDP in 2022.
Many Ghanaians visit Times Square, a prominent tourist site in the United States, which attract about 50 million visitors annually and many other placemaking in USA. This has built a strong relationship between the two thereby increasing their economic, social and investment value.
“Inasmuch as placemaking can stimulate economies, promote infrastructure development and protect natural and cultural resources. The indigenous people of every placemaking are the best people to outline and give clear details of their tourist sites. They are in the best position to narrate the historical facts of the area.” Dr Kojo Sackey.
it is very crucial to recognize its impact on Indigenous communities and the need for cultural connection. The reckless commodification of cultural assets alienates Indigenous communities, perpetuates cultural exploitation and endangers biodiversity. Indigenous Involvement in the decision-making processes of tourism development and policy formulation is essential to ensure that the magic of cultural tourism benefits everyone involved, preserving authenticity and fostering mutual understanding. He entreated World leaders to pay much attention on tourist areas.
